The 2022 NFL Combine WR Notes!

Everyone loves the quarterbacks, but we didn't learn a whole lot on that front. There was lots of chatter about Kenny Pickett's hands coming in at 8.5" but when you watch him throw next to the other top QBs it's clear the narrative is overblown. Matt Corral did not participate, so we will have to wait to see him at the Ole Miss Pro Day.

The theme of the first day was speed and unofficial 40 times. We saw Chris Olave out of Ohio State break 4.3 and an unofficial 4.21 to break the all-time record, just to have the official times fall way short of those marks. Below is a list of the fastest official times amongst the group of Wide Receivers from Dane Brugler.

The two notable players not part of the list are Treylon Burks, who ran a 4.55, and David Bell, who ran a 4.65. Burks we hoped would be faster, but nobody should be surprised by Bell's lack of speed, if you were watching the tape it's evident that is not how he wins. While it's not a concern for us overall, Burks' lack of athleticism was disappointing.

Christian Watson continues to impress with his verified 4.36s 40-yard dash. He had the furthest broad jump at 11 feet, 4 inches. He also tied with Skyy Moore for the fastest 10-yard split amongst all wide receivers at 1.46 seconds. His stock continues to rise no matter where he goes, and at 6'3 210lbs, with 10" hands, he looks like a bonafide X. The days of him being a sleeper are over.

Khalil Shakir, WR Boise State

Everything he did at the combine checked many measurable athletic boxes, but can his production on the field back it up?

Short answer - yes. In his second season at Boise State, Shakir broke out with 63 receptions, 872 yards, and 6 touchdowns. Those numbers led to a 22.0% reception share and a 21.6% dominator rating. Breaking out in your second season is great, but his third season is what is really impressive. The now junior posted a 52 reception, 719 yard, and 6 touchdown season. While those raw numbers look worse than his sophomore campaign, he did that in half the games (7 games in 2020, 14 games in 2019). He had a 37.4% reception share and smashed over the even more important breakout threshold (30% dominator rating), posting a 46.2% dominator rating.

The final piece to Shakir's puzzle will be draft capital. NFLMockDraftDatabase.com has Shakir as an early to mid 3rd round pick. Khalil Shakir will be a steal at his current SuperFlex ADP (late 3rd round) if that holds.

Hawaii Offensive POTY, Kainoa Carvalho

Kainoa aka Kaikai Carvalho out of Kahuku High School in Hawaii is a different breed. Coming in at only 5'7 155lbs may have you think he is too small to make such a big impact. But his imprint on every single game starts because he has the heart of a lion.

Kaikai was the water boy for this team growing up as his uncle and dad coached, always dreaming for his shot one day. Covid took away his sophomore season as Hawaii sports was suspended, so he moved to Utah to play for one year. Upon returning this season. Kaikai put his home community and his own name on the map with an undefeated championship season knocking off the 4-time defending state champs led by his 135 yards and 2 TDs.

Kaikai literally did it all, from placekicker to punter, kick returner, to RB, to his top position of WR where he put up over 1000 yards and 10 TDs in 10 games. With only 3 offers on the table so far, I fully expect Kaikai to be a fast riser with the electricity and open field magic he brings to every game.

In episode 49, @TheBenEby kicks off March by visiting Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, and Utah to look for the rest of the west high school class of 2023 prospects! Don’t let some of these three-star prospects fool you. There is elite electricity, physicality, and agility to be found where most won’t look!

Adam (@atm4dchess) and Mike (@iowamichael) discuss how important your league-mates are in trading and how to best navigate sending out offers and handling incoming offers.

Gene @FantasyGenes and Ike @Just_Ike09 continue the position tiers series: RB edition. Volume is king & strongly correlates to RB fantasy production. Is Christian McCaffrey still a Tier 1 RB? How high does Najee Harris deserve to be? Too low on Ezekiel Elliott? Are rookies being undervalued?
